“WE VALUE YOUR OPINION, WE VALUE WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE” - Mac Layne

Who is Mac Layne?

Mac is our exceptional Language and Development Consultant at Empathy in Action Consulting. With a background in nonprofit development work across various organizations, Mac brings a wealth of experience to our team. In 2021, Mac made the decision to join EIA after being inspired by our organization's mission and values. Since joining, Mac has been instrumental in expanding our reputation in nonprofit development, going beyond to making a lasting impact in our community. With a shared passion for giving back and a deep understanding of effective communication, Mac's expertise has elevated our work at EIA to new heights.

In Mac's own words, he shared his transformative experience at Empathy in Action Consulting and how it has shaped him both personally and professionally. One of the standout aspects that Mac noticed was the emphasis on practicing empathy towards employees. Coming from previous jobs where empathy was lacking, Mac witnessed firsthand the negative impact it had, leading many individuals to leave those positions. However, EIA stood out as a place that allowed space for thoughts, opinions, and even disagreements, all while upholding the principles of empathy and respect. This inclusive and supportive environment not only fosters employee well-being but also encourages them to stay and thrive within the organization.

“I've seen highly qualified and kind people leave positions because their ideas were not taken into consideration, their abilities were not trusted, and their needs were not taken seriously. Essentially, in my view these people left their positions because they were treated as cogs in a system rather than human beings with their own set of unique qualities and abilities. Of course not every employee ends up aligning with the values of the organization that hired them, but I've definitely seen people who were highly dedicated to the mission of an organization leave because of a lack of understanding of (and compassion for) their innate "human-ness" which, if viewed from a strength-based mindset, can often lead to truly innovative, collaborative, and impactful outcomes.”

“EMPATHY IN ACTION IS OUR NAME SO YOU HAVE TO WALK THE WALK. IT’S AN ACCOUNTABILITY MEASURE. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE EMPATHIC, WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN-CENTERED AND OPEN. WHEN WE DO OUR WORK, IT'S NOT A DIFFERENT THING; IT'S JUST HOW WE ACT.” - Mac Layne

Mac emphasized the significance of empathy, drawing from his own life experiences where the absence of it drove coworkers away. At Empathy in Action, the commitment to treating everyone well, including employees and clients, has been instrumental in our company's success over the past two and a half years. This dedication to embodying empathy and respect in our work has created a strong foundation for positive relationships and fruitful collaborations. By prioritizing the well-being of both employees and clients, we have cultivated an environment that allows individuals to bring their whole selves to the table, ultimately contributing to the company's overall success.

“I've been in the capoeira world since I was a teenager, and for those who are not familiar with the art form, it is a martial art/cultural expression/community ritual that holds the entire range of human emotion and experience in its customs, traditions, and daily practice. Capoeira at its root is a community-based art form, and I have seen human transgressions met with hostility and anger within the community, and I have also seen them met with a restorative and empathetic approach. If the latter is employed correctly, capoeira can be an incredible tool for restorative justice and conflict resolution. As a microcosm of our larger world, I have seen just how harshly punitive or transformative a community can be, depending on the mindset and training of its members.”

“MY ACTIONS ARE MY ONLY TRUE BELONGINGS.” - THICH NHAT HANH

“My time at EIA has allowed me to deeply reflect on my own biases, assumptions, and automatic ways of reacting to situations that challenge my own beliefs and/or values. It has made me more intentional about how I approach life and the myriad ways that people show up in my experience. I truly feel that my time at EIA has made me a happier, more patient, and hopefully more empathetic individual in all of my relationships.”

At Empathy in Action, we are passionate about practicing empathy and fostering a culture of respect within our organization. This unique approach has had a profound impact on individuals like Mac and has contributed to our thriving success. We believe that empathy is a powerful tool that can transform workplaces and create a positive environment for everyone involved.
